Technology
giant Apple unveiled a new range
of iPads (3rd Gen) that it said will take
tablet computers to "a whole new
level". The computer will have
higher resolution than ever
before, a video recorder and a
five megapixel camera with auto
focus and auto exposure.
It will also
have "voice dictation" which
allows people to dictate
straight to their computer
rather than type. Apple said the
"retina display", which uses 3.1
million pixels on the 9.7 inch
display screen, would have "the
highest resolution display ever
on a mobile device". Another
feature is a high speed 4G
wireless network which will
allow users to download pictures
and films quicker than before.
Speaking
via a video link from
California, the company's CEO
Tim Cook said: "It is amazing,
we're taking it to a whole new
level". The
tablet, which weighs 1.4lbs,
will go on sale in the UK on
March 16 for between £399 and
£659. Cook
said: "We think that iPad is the
poster child of the post PC
world. The momentum behind iPad
has been incredible and
surprised nearly everyone".
He also said
the device was "showing up
everywhere in the daily life of
people, in their work life, in
their play life, all around the
world". He added:
"Everyone's been wondering who
will come out with the product
that is more amazing than the
iPad2...well stop wondering. We
are."
Apple's
senior vice president of
Worldwide Marketing, Phil
Schiller, said the "retina
display" technology would mean
users would "see graphics and
text sharper than you could
imagine. Just beautiful".
Journalists at the event were
shown examples of apps developed
for the new iPad, which will
have a 10-hour battery life,
including photo editing software
and games that use its enhanced
display.
Cook said "gorgeous and groundbreaking" apps being developed for it would lead to more people using the iPad and in turn lead to more apps being developed. He added that 2012 would see "a lot more of this kind of innovation, we are just getting started". Apple also announced that the price of the iPad 2 would fall to between £329 and £429 after the launch of the new device. Cook said it would mean "more people can afford to get into this ground breaking device".
Ernest Doku, tech expert at uSwitch.com, said the new iPad was "streets ahead" of its rivals. He said: "With more horsepower under the bonnet, an all-new 5-megapixel camera and a mind-blowing display bringing higher definition images than the TVs in our homes, the new iPad certainly wows in the feature stakes. "The addition of 4G capability is more relevant for the US market at the moment, but it shows how much Apple is really future-proofing its new tablet".

History And Beginnings
iPads are a range of portable
tablet computers designed, developed and marketed by Apple inc.
primarily as a platform for audio-visual media including books,
periodicals, movies, music, games and web content.
The 'original' or '1st generation'
of iPads were
revealed to the world on 27th January 2010. It was available in 6
versions, 16GB with WiFi, WiFi & 3G, 32GB with WiFi, WiFi & 3G, 64GB with WiFi & Wi-Fi & 3G.
Released for sale in April 2010 the
'original' or '1st generation' iPads sold 3
million units in 80 days. In 2010 14.8 million iPads were sold
worldwide, they made up 75% of all tablet pc's sold that
year.
The iPad2 was unveiled on 2nd March 2011 and
was released on sale later that month worldwide. It is also available in 6 versions the same as the
original iPads; 16GB with Wi-Fi, 16GB with Wi-Fi & 3G, 32GB with
Wi-Fi, 32GB with Wi-Fi & 3G, 64GB with Wi-Fi & 64GB with Wi-Fi & 3G.
The 3rd generation iPads were
unveiled in the US on March 7th 2012 and went on sale the same month
in the UK.
Why Is The iPad The Best Over Other Tablets?
If you’re thinking about purchasing one of the iPads, you’ve more
than likely already noticed that it's more expensive than nearly
all other tablets that are on the market. If you don’t know much
about Apple and the iPad, you might be asking yourself “What’s so
great about it?” Well, I’m going to tell you it's one of the best tablets on the market at the moment.
Support – When you want to buy a relatively expensive
product, you want to know that if anything were to happen to it that
it would be repaired quickly and without charge, right? Well, this
is exactly what you get with Apple. Apple is well-known to provide
an unbeatable customer service, so if you buy one of the iPads you can have
the peace of mind that if it needed any repairs, Apple would gladly
help you out.
Applications – This is one of the major things that iPads have
over any other tablet, the number applications available. There are
so many applications on the “App Store”, you’ll be spoiled for
choice. Other tablets may have a few thousand apps available, but the App store has
many, many more! There’s literally an app for just about anything
that you can think of.
Design – I don’t think any other tablet can compete with iPads
in relation to its design or looks. The design is slim and stylish while
still feeling strong while you’re holding it.
Performance – Since the new iPad3 has a quad A5X core
processor, there’s no need to worry about whether it can handle
running several applications at once. As well as having a faster
processor with more cores than the iPad2 it also has twice as much
RAM, so if you ever used the original or 2nd generation iPads and
thought they were fast, you’re in for a great surprise when you get your
hands on one of the new 3rd generation iPads!
Software – Personally, I think that iOS (the operating system that
runs on iPads) is one of the best operating systems that’s
available today. There are so many added features compared to older iOS software. As well as this, Apple are constantly coming up with
new ideas of how they can improve the operating system, so you’ll
always have something to look forward to if you buy one of the new iPads.
Battery Life – You can get roughly ten hours of battery life
from all of the iPads, which is very good for a tablet. This means
that most people can get days and days of use without the need to
charge it.
Two Cameras – Very few tablets have two cameras, especially cameras
that take a decent picture too! The 2nd & 3rg generation iPads have both of these
features, the camera at the front is also great for chatting to
friends and family online.
Top uses for an iPad
You can do just about anything on iPads. The days where you needed a
laptop, an mp3 player and a console to play your games on is long gone. Once you
have one, you can do nearly anything that you want. If you’re asking
yourself whether it’s worth it to purchase since you’re not too sure
what you’d actually use it for, here are some things that you could use it for:
Music – If you love music it could be the perfect gadget for you. Some
people don’t really think of it as a music player, but it’s one of
the best ones around! Think about it, since it’s made by Apple you have access
to the iTunes Store which will allow you to buy basically any song that’s out as
well as not needing to buy any speakers to play your music on since they
already have built in speakers which are very loud for the size of the device.
If you’ve ever used an iPod before in the past, you’ll know how easy it is to
create playlists, play songs by a particular artist and so on. It’s the exact
same case with these.
Games – There are thousands upon thousands of games that have been
specifically made for iPads. No matter what type of games you like, you can
be sure that you’ll find it. By using the App Store you can download a wide
variety of different type of games, whether they’re free games or games that you
have to pay for. Another bonus is that many games that are popular on consoles
such as the Nintendo Ds are available on the App Store but at a much cheaper
price.
Online Browsing – No matter what you love doing on the internet, the iPads have
got you covered. If you spend loads of time on Youtube, you can use the Youtube
app to watch all the videos that you want, if you want to go on any website
that’s on the internet, you can use Safari to go to it, if you constantly check
your email address for new emails, you can use the Mail app to always know if
you’ve got an email or not.
Reading Books – Many people also use their iPads as a way to read the
latest books. With iBooks (which comes pre-installed on your device on the
latest iOS) you can read books just like you would with normally, by flicking
pages to go to the next page etc. There are a lot of books which are completely
free to download as well as some books that you’ll need to pay for to read. What
makes it so much better than other e-book readers is that you can do multiple
tasks at once. For example, while you’re reading a book you can listen to any
song.
Are they worth the money?
There are so many people who ask whether purchasing an iPad is worth the money
that Apple charge for them, but how can you decide? It obviously depends on how
much use that you’ll get from it, but in my opinion I think that they are worth
the money. Some people assume that because they are seen as an expensive gadget
to buy, it’s not worth the money – but this couldn’t be any further from the
truth. Anyway, I’m going to mention some of the reasons why I think it’s worth
spending that little bit extra on this amazing bit of technology:
Travel – If you travel a lot, getting one of the iPads could be a good idea for
you. You might be thinking to yourself that you already have a laptop, so why
bother getting another gadget so you can browse the web? But it’s simple really,
there’s no hassle carrying one around all day long since they are so light,
where as laptops can be quite heavy, especially if you’re carrying it around all
day. If you just use your laptop or desktop computer to check emails, read the
news online and so on, I’d seriously recommend that you think about getting one, it just makes life so much easier.
Quality – The quality of the products are great. That’s one of the main
reasons why Apple put a high price tag on their products since they want to make
sure that it’ll last a relatively long period of time. Other gadgets may seem
cheap, but there’s a good chance that it’s a false economy since you’ll more
than likely have a problem or two with them over the following year or two. With
iPads though, you can be nearly certain that nothing will happen to your device,
and if it does, Apple are known to actually care about their customers unlike
most other large brands.
Easy Access To Wireless – There has never been a device on the market
before which makes it so easy to access wireless networks wherever you are. Take
this for an example, you’re in a hotel and want to use their wireless connection
to check your emails. You have two choices, either set up your laptop which
takes a couple of minutes, mess about with connection settings to get in to the
wireless network etc. Or, you could just tap the mail icon and
check your emails straight away! I know which one I’d choose.
3G – If you have one of the 3G iPads, you can go online no matter where
you are. This means that you can go online when you’re in the car, on the train
or even while you’re out shopping for example.
New iOS 5 Update, What’s New?
Apples newest software release has
recently been released. It’s been called one of the best updates so
far, but what can you expect from it? Well, there are loads of new
added features, some of which are obvious once you install the new
update, but there are also some new things that most people probably
haven’t even noticed after having iOS5 on their device for a number
of months! So, here are some things that you can look forward to
seeing in the new operating system for iPads:
iCloud – I’ll start off with one of the biggest changes that
Apple has ever implemented so far. Within the last couple of months,
you may of heard people talking about storing files in “the cloud”.
If you aren’t sure what this means, it’s basically a way of storing
files ranging from music to word documents so that you can have
access to them wherever you are. So, let’s say that you are on
holiday and want to check one of your documents, you’ll be able to
do that on any laptop! iCloud is the same, except it’s built
specifically for Apple devices. Every user gets 5GB storage free of charge and if you need
more it’s around £20 per year.
Notification Centre – Notification centre is a new way of
checking on things that you may have not noticed. It
lists messages that haven’t been read yet, application notifications
(such as a message on Facebook) and more. You can access
notification centre by sliding your finger from the top of your
device down to the bottom of your device.
Syncing – Syncing is now much easier on iOS5, you can now
sync your music, pictures etc. without the need of connecting to your laptop / Macbook and so on. You can do all of this
wirelessly now, which saves a lot of time.
iMessage – iMessage allows all iOS5 users to message each
other over the internet at no cost. This is really useful if you
have one of the 3G or 4G models, since you’ll be able to message people no matter
where you are. It’s really simple too, just go to the messages app
and choose who you want to send a message to.
Twitter – Twitter is now a lot easier to use on your iDevice.
There’s no need to launch Safari or any other browser to go on
Twitter since it’s now built in to the operating system. This makes
it much easier to send messages to all of your friends on Twitter.
Camera Changes – There have been a few changes made to the
camera in Apples new software update. One of the most noticeable
differences is that you can go straight to the camera without
needing to unlock your lock screen and then tapping on the camera
app. This ensures that you’ll never miss out on a special moment
again!
That’s some of the new improvements that have been made in iOS5 for
the iPads, there are plenty more but these are some of the most
important changes which Apple have made.
